Your Wedding Photography Questions, Answered
Building a wedding day timeline can feel like a juggling act, particularly when portraits, natural light, and family moments are all vying for the same window of time. Here are the questions couples raise most often about first looks, winter portrait scheduling, shot lists, and family photo traditions.
Common Wedding Photo Questions
Why did you take your bridal party and family portraits before the ceremony?
Because we opted for a first look, we could capture every bridal party and immediate family photo before the ceremony began. That let us shoot outdoors at the gorgeous venue and still join our guests for happy hour.
What time of day should a winter wedding take portraits?
For the best light, a winter wedding means either scheduling your ceremony early in the afternoon or wrapping all photos before it begins. On December 4th the sun set at 5:30 and our ceremony started at 4:30, so every image had to be captured beforehand.
Should I give my wedding photographer a shot list?
Definitely. Handing over a list of every photo you want is one of the wisest moves you can make. Without it, many of the images we cherish today might never have been taken.
What is a first look, and how does it affect your photo timeline?
A first look is when the couple sees each other before the ceremony. Since we planned one, we were able to complete our bridal party and family portraits ahead of time instead of scrambling through them afterward.
Do you have any family photo traditions at weddings?
A meaningful tradition in my family is that at every family wedding, we all come together for a group photo. It is lovely to look back and see how our family has expanded and how we have all grown up.
